Screening at Chaplin’s World

Love All You Have Left is the story of Juliette (played by me) who is distraught after the death of her young daughter. One day when she goes to investigate some noise in her attic she finds a teenage girl (played by Sara Wolfkind) living there who says her name is Anne Frank.

This is the first feature film that my husband wrote and directed. I was fortunate to star and executive produce. It took Matt about 5 years to write it, working on it off and on as inspiration hit him. The idea started when we were in Cannes Film Festival in 2011 promoting our short film Just Desserts (Short Film Corner). The festival had a section about pitching your next project for new filmmakers. We got ready for it but decided not to pitch it and instead spend time developing it.

The band Neutral Milk Hotel inspired Matt’s screenplay. In their album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea the band makes several references to Anne Frank. Matt read an interview with Jeff Mangum, the songwriter for the band, in which he stated that after reading the Diary of Anne Frank he continually had dreams about her, and so she featured prominently in the album. We thought it was sort of like he was being haunted by Anne Frank and that became the original idea behind the story. I strongly encouraged Matt to write it.

The diary of Anne Frank is a mandatory read at school in the USA and it is part of the biggest genocide in history. Sadly without wanting to be political it is still a very important topic nowadays.

We’ll be having a screening of the film on January 10^th 2018 at Chaplin’s World. The proceeds of the tickets will be donated to the Anne Frank house in honor of what Anne Frank stood for. The Anne Frank House brings Anne Frank’s life story to the attention of people all over the world to encourage them to reflect on the dangers of antisemitsm, racism and discrimination and the importance of freedom, equal rights and democracy.

The film will be playing in English with French subtitles. This will be the first time it will be shared in Europe with an audience. I’m delighted to have it happen in my dear Home Swiss Home and more importantly in the more than beautiful region of Montreux-Riviera where I grew up. I couldn’t expect a more magical place for it. Love All You Have Left est l’histoire de Juliette (interprétée par Caroline Amiguet), une femme brisée par la mort de sa fille (interprétée par Kathleen Sheehy). Un jour, alors qu’elle entend du bruit provenant de son grenier, elle y découvre une adolescente (interprétée par Sara Wolfkind) disant s’appeler Anne Frank.

Je suis une enfant de la région Montreux Riviera, une ancienne Miss Suisse romande et une actrice. Je préfère le terme artiste.  Mon époux et moi sommes ravis de faire le voyage depuis les Etats-Unis pour venir partager notre film et espèrons qu’il plaira.

C’est le premier long métrage que mon mari a écrit et réalisé. J’ai eu la chance d’avoir le rôle principal dedans et d’être la productrice exécutive. Il a fallu environ 5 ans à Matt pour l’écrire. L’idée a fleuri lorsque nous étions au Festival de Cannes en 2011 pour promouvoir notre court-métrage Just Desserts (Short Film Corner). Le festival proposait des entrevues filmées durant lesquelles on nous proposait de « pitcher » nos projets à venir. Nous nous sommes préparés pour cette présentation mais avons finalement décidé de ne pas y participer et de prendre le temps de développer notre histoire.

Le groupe Neutral Milk Hotel a inspiré le scénario de Matt. Dans leur album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, le groupe fait plusieurs références à Anne Frank. Matt est tombé sur une interview avec Jeff Mangum, l’auteur-compositeur du groupe, dans laquelle il a déclaré qu’après avoir lu le journal d’Anne Frank, il avait continuellement des rêves à son sujet. C’est pour cela qu’elle est présente tout au long dans l’album. C’est comme s’il était hanté par Anne Frank et c’est devenu l’idée originale derrière l’histoire de Matt.

Le journal d’Anne Frank est une lecture obligatoire dans les écoles secondaires (7ème année du cursus scolaire soit 13 ans) aux États-Unis.  Nous espérons attirer également des adolescents de +13 ans et leurs parents.

Nous aurons une projection du film le 10 janvier 2018 au Chaplin’s World. Le film est en version originale (anglais) avec sous-titres en français. L’argent récolté grâce à la vente des billets sera reversé par Dongo Productions à l’oeuvre caritative Anne Frank House, un célèbre musée créé en mémoire d’Anne Frank. Anne Frank House attire des milliers de visiteurs du monde entier et permet de s’immerger (un peu) dans la vie d’Anne Frank afin d’encourager la réflexion sur les dangers de l’antisémitisme, du racisme et de la discrimination et également sur l’importance de la liberté, de l’égalité des droits et de la démocratie.

Je suis ravie que cela se produise dans ma tendre Home Swiss Home, d’autant plus dans la belle région de Montreux-Riviera où j’ai grandi. Je n’aurai pu imaginer un lieu plus magique pour cela.
